Fake job offers cost job seekers in India money, time and personal data every day. Use this checklist before you share documents or pay anything.
The golden rule
A real employer never asks you to pay to get a job. Registration fees, “refundable” security deposits, training charges, laptop or kit deposits and “processing fees” are all warning signs. On Job House India, applying is always free, and employers who ask for money are suspended.
Red flags
- An offer letter arrives without any interview, or after a single short chat on WhatsApp or Telegram.
- Pay that is far above the market for the role, such as “₹50,000 a month for data entry from home”.
- Pressure to decide or pay “today”, or you’ll lose the seat.
- The recruiter uses a personal Gmail or Yahoo address, or a look-alike domain (for example infosys-careers.co instead of infosys.com).
- Requests for your bank OTP, UPI PIN, or card details, or a request to install screen-sharing apps.
- “Part-time tasks” such as liking videos or rating hotels, where you must first deposit money to unlock earnings.
- No physical office, no verifiable company website, or a company name copied from a well-known brand.
How to check an offer
- Find the role on the company’s official careers page. If it isn’t there, ask the company directly through its official website.
- Check that the email domain matches the company’s real website.
- Look up the company on the Job House India company directory. A Verified badge means we reviewed the business. Unclaimed means the company hasn’t joined.
- Never share your OTP, PIN or passwords, and never pay “to secure” a job.
- Get the offer in writing on the company’s letterhead, with salary, role, location and joining date. Compare it with any terms shared on the platform.
If you’ve been targeted
- Report it on the national cybercrime portal (cybercrime.gov.in) or call the cybercrime helpline 1930 as soon as possible, especially if money was paid.
- Tell your bank immediately if you shared card or UPI details.
- If the job was on Job House India, use Report this job on the listing, or our grievance page. We acknowledge complaints within 24 hours.
